July 14, 2005
July 14, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - As part of its "50 States in 50 Days" promotion, ESPN is polling visitors to its Web site on the top attractions of each state, and the Monon Bell Classic is among the choices under "best rivalry." At this writing, the DePauw-Wabash game is ranked #3 among the nine choices: Indiana University vs. Purdue (basketball) is #1 (40.3% of the vote), Notre Dame vs. Purdue (football) is second (24.5%), while the battle for the Bell has 8.2%, five-tenths of a point ahead of the Indiana Pacers-Detroit Pistons rivalry. The IU-Purdue football rivalry is last, at 1%.
The poll also lists Dan Quayle, America's 44th Vice President and 1969 graduate of DePauw, among the choices for "favorite personality or historical figure," alongside Kurt Vonnegut, Benjamin Harrison, John Mellencamp and David Letterman.
There's still time for you to vote, and you'll find the ballot by clicking here.
Again this year, the historic battle between DePauw University and Wabash College -- tied at 51-51-9 -- will be available live nationwide via DirecTV on channel 321. Fans in Central Indiana will also be able to tune in to WHMB (Channel 40), which will also carry the game live from DePauw's Blackstock Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. on November 12.
