Birmingham-Southern to Become Division III Program, May Join DePauw in SCAC

June 1, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - Birmingham-Southern College will leave NCAA Division I and the Big South Conference and join Division III as soon as the 2007-08 school year, reports South Carolina's Rock Hill Herald. "The school, which is one of the smallest in Division I in terms of enrollment, will likely move to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Association, made up of schools such as Sewanee, Rhodes College, Centre College, DePauw University and Millsaps College."Gary McCann notes, "Ten of the 11 schools in the SCAC [including DePauw] house Phi Beta Kappa chapters, as does Birmingham-Southern."
As a Division I school, Birmingham-Southern has "won seven Big South titles and competed in three NCAA tournaments," the article adds.
