Astronaut Joe Allen '59 Returns to Greencastle August 5

June 8, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - "Retired astronaut and DePauw University graduate Joseph P. Allen will be the event's featured speaker," notes Greencastle's Banner-Graphic in a story previewing the August 5 gala for the Putnam County Museum. "Allen flew two space flights ... He was born in Indiana in 1937 and earned a bachelor of arts in mathematics and physics from DePauw and his master's and doctorate degrees from Yale University," the newspaper reports. "Allen's father, 'Perk,' taught accounting at DePauw for a number of years."

Joe Allen is a 1959 graduate of DePauw University. A member of DePauw University's Board of Trustees, Dr. Allen flew as a mission specialist on two space shuttle flights and served as a mission controller for Apollo 15 and 17 and for the first test flight of the space shuttle. During his NASA career, Allen also served as assistant administrator of the agency from 1975-1978 and as director of astronaut training and operations in the early 1980s.
