DePauw Singers Take Five 1st Place Awards at Statewide Competition

October 30, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - Eighteen voice students in the DePauw University School of Music took awards -- five won first-place honors -- at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) statewide competition in Indianapolis over the weekend. More than 250 students from Indiana colleges and universities participated in the contest, which took place at Butler University. Students who won or placed move on to the NATS Great Lakes Regional Competition, which will be held in March 2007.
The following are the DePauw winners, with their voice professor noted in parenthesis:
- Category B: Musical Theatre, 1st & 2nd Year College Men & Women -- First Place: Matt Patterson (student of Caroline Smith).
- Category C: Musical Theatre, 2nd & 3rd Year College Men & Women -- Second Place: Lindsay Adams (Pamela Coburn).
- Category 2: First-Year College Women, Classical -- First Place: Carly LaForest (Caroline Smith) and Caroline Murphy (Keith Tonne); Second Place: Emily Ehlers (Keith Tonne); Honorable Mention: Andrea Schwarz-Freeburg (Jay White).
- Category 3: First-Year College Men, Classical -- Second Place: Andrew Richardson (Caroline Smith).
- Category 4: Second-Year College Women, Classical -- First Place: Shie Kantor (Caroline Smith) Second Place: Carolyn-Anne Templeton (Caroline Smith); Third Place: Amelia Jenison (Pamela Coburn).
- Category 5: Second-Year College Men, Classical -- Second Place: Joe Shadday (Caroline Smith) and Brandon Piper (Keith Tonne); Third Place: Darein Burton (Stanley Irwin).
- Category 7: Mature Beginner, Classical -- First Place: Ralph Garcia (Stanley Irwin).
- Category 8: Third-Year College Women, Classical -- Second Place: Laura Ann Johnson (Stanley Irwin).
- Category 10: Fourth-Year College Women, Classical -- Second Place: Elizabeth Hartnett (Pamela Coburn); Honorable Mention: Jessica Finchum (Stanley Irwin).
- Category 11: Fourth-Year College Men, Classical -- Second Place: Kyle Aberle (Caroline Smith).
