Prof. May Phang is Finalist in 2007 Iowa Piano Competition

May Phang 06.jpgJanuary 22, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - May Phang, assistant professor of music at DePauw University, is one of "12 pianists chosen to compete in the 2007 Iowa Piano Competition," reports the Sioux City Journal. The contestants "were announced Sunday afternoon at a recital presented by Assaff Weisman, winner of the 2006 competition, at the Orpheum Theatre. The intensive three-day competition is hosted by the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra March 8-10. The top six prize winners receive cash awards with the winner receiving $7,500."

Of Dr. Phang, the newspaper writes, "this assistant professor of piano at DePauw University, Greencastle, Ind., was the fifth place winner in the Iowa Piano Competition in 2006. Phang has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Banff Festival Chamber Players,May Phang 2.gif DePauw Symphony Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony. She has given recitals throughout the world including the Concertgebouw-Netherlands, Santa Fe, Victoria Concert Hall, Singapore, and Idyllwild Arts Academy, California."

A native of Singapore, May Phang earned her Associate and Licentiate diplomas from the Trinity College of Music (London) by the age of twelve. A graduate of McGill University in Canada, she obtained her doctorate from Temple University in Philadelphia.
