Tucker Award Presented to Prof. Jim Rambo

April 20, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - James S. Rambo, Laurel H. Turk Professor of Modern Languages (Spanish and Portuguese) at DePauw University, is the 2007 recipient of the Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Tucker Jr. Distinguished Career Award. The honor is made annually by the president of the University to a senior member of the faculty. The award is designed to recognize the achievements of those faculty members who have made notable contributions to DePauw by their commitments to students, teaching excellence, their chosen disciplines, and University service. A member of the DePauw faculty since 1966, Dr. Rambo will be retiring at the end of the current academic year.
Another highlight of this evening's Timothy H. and Sharon Ubben Society of Teacher-Scholars and Faculty Recognition Dinner, held at the Student Social Center at the Walden Inn, was the presentation of the Edwin L. Minar Jr. Scholarship Award to two individuals. David N. Gellman, associate professor of history, and Jeffrey T. Kenney, associate professor and chair of religious studies, are the seventh and eighth recipients of the honor. Established in 1981, the Minar Award is presented in recognition of exceptional scholarly achievement and is named in honor of its first recipient, a former professor in the department of classical studies. At the dinner, Neal B. Abraham, executive vice president of the University and dean of the faculty, also announced that bell hooks (pictured below left) -- an African-American intellectual, feminist and social activist who has published more than 20 books -- will be in residence in September 2007 as Elizabeth P. Allen Distinguished University Professor. hooks' works include the recent releases Witness and Soul Sister: Women, Friendship and Fulfillment.
DePauw will welcome two new Distinguished Visiting Professors next fall:
- John K. Roth, Robert and Carolyn Frederick Distinguished Visiting Professor of Ethics
- Jay S. Hosler '89, Lee G. Hall Distinguished Visiting Professor of Biology
Dr. Abraham also introduced other appointees to endowed professorships and chairs and recognized other appointments, as well as the recipients of the University and Distinguished Professorships. A complete list, which appeared in the evening's program, can be accessed by clicking here.
