Greencastle Among Midwest Living's 'Best Small-Town Getaways'
May 15, 2007
May 15, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - "DePauw University anchors a town near Parke County's famous covered bridges," notes the June edition of Midwest Living magazine, which lists Greencastle among the "100 Best Small-Town Getaways." Seven towns from Indiana made the list, which is topped by Wisconsin's Ephraim/Fish Creek, located in famous Door County.
"The Midwest has about 8,500 towns with populations less than 20,000," write the magazine's editors. "Practically speaking, we've been looking for the best ones for 20 years, starting with Midwest Living's first issue in 1987. Our editors have been on the road ever since."
The text adds, "It took us years to compile this list of the best places to visit, but you'll need only a weekend in any of these 100 to see why we did."
Towns were ranked in twelve categories: attractions, vibe, scenery, walkability, shopping, dining, lodging, arts scene, outdoor activities, proximity to major cities, multiday potential and wild card (for special events and festivals).
"Small-town getaways are an important part of Indiana tourism," says Amy Vaughan, director of the Indiana Office of Tourism Development. "The competition for tourism dollars is high, but this list shows that Indiana is faring very well against other top small-town destinations in the Midwest."

"DePauw's 2,400 students coexist with Greencastle's 10,000 citizens in a community that combines contemporary art and Victorian antiques, poetry slams and covered-bridge festivals," noted Indianapolis Monthly. The magazine's August 2006 issue listed Greencastle among the "Best of the College Towns." Read more in this previous story.
