October 30, 2007
October 30, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - Vickie (Knoy) Parker, who received a master's degree from DePauw University in 1979, is a semifinalist for Indiana Teacher of the Year. She has taught speech, English and theatre at Greencastle High School since 1985 and established a class for at-risk incoming freshmen.
"I am a cheerleader for the at-risk middle-of-the-road students," Parker tells the Banner-Graphic. "That's where my heart and efforts lie. My advanced placement students will learn in spite of me. My special needs students will get the extra help they deserve and need. I want to step up for our students who can, but don't, succeed."
"Whether it's at-risk freshman or an advanced placement students, every single kid she has loved her because she teaches them with dignity and respect," adds Jim Church, principal of Greencastle High. "I've never seen anyone like her."
