Carl Ell '04 to Step Down as President of Northeastern University

March 1, 1958, Greencastle, Ind. - Carl S. Ell, president of Northeastern University and 1904 graduate of DePauw University, will retire from the presidency effective June 30, 1959. Dr. Ell has been Northeastern's president for 18 years and has served the University for 48 years.
Ell joined the Northeastern staff on October 1, 1910, as an instructor in civil engineering and later became chair of the department, dean of the College of Engineering, dean of the Day Colleges, vice president in 1925, and then president on July 1, 1940. During his nearly five decades at Northeastern, Dr. Ell has become widely known as an outstanding educational figure and has provided the leadership for Northeastern's remarkable growth in recemnt years.
During the past 20 years, Ell has led the development of Northeastern's physical properties from one small building on the then two-acre campus to 19 buildings, ten of which are located directly on the present seventeen-acre campus. During that time, the school's assets rose from $2 million to $23 million.
Carl Ell received an A.B. from DePauw in 1909 and holds the S.B. and M.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; the Ed.M. from Harvard; and honorary degrees from DePauw, Tufts, Boston, Rhode Island, and Emerson College.
Dr. Ell received DePauw's Old Gold Goblet last year.
