Gifts From the Late Edgar Prevo '12 Now Total More Than $1 Million
December 27, 1977
December 27, 1977, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw University has received a bequest of $681,000 from the estate of Edgar A. Prevo, a longtime Greencastle businessman and member of DePauw's Class of 1912, bringing his total gifts to DePauw to more than $1 million. Prevo died in 1975. The latest bequest will be used to establish the Edgar A. Prevo Scholarship for students in Putnam County.
In 1964, Mr. Prevo gave the University $300,000 for a new Science and Mathematics Center. At the time, he said, "I have been saving for 20 years to give this to DePauw University. As a boy I recall walking through the campus on cinder walks past some of the buildings -- some were nice, others not so nice. I have always wanted, before I died, to be able to help DePauw add a new science building to its campus. So I thought I'd give the college this little gift."
The Prevo Science Library in the science and math center (seen at right) now bears his name.
Other major gifts during his lifetime included sums toward the construction of the Memorial Student Union building, Roy O. West Library, and Bishop Roberts Hall.
Edgar Prevo retired in 1963 from active management of the Prevo Department Store, which his father founded in 1900 as the Model Clothing Store.
