Ted Katula to Assist New Football Coach Tom Mont
June 13, 1959
June 13, 1959, Greencastle, Ind. - "Ted Katula, former Ohio State athlete and assistant coach at Oberlin College last year, yesterday was named an assistant to Tommy Mont, DePauw University's new football coach," reports today's Indianapolis Star. "The 27-year-old Katula also will be head baseball coach. Roy Brann of Brazil has been acting mentor. As football assistant, Katula succeeds Skip Mathieson, who has accepted a high school coaching job in Highland Park, Illinois," adds the newspaper.
Katula was an end on the 1952 and 1956 Ohio State football teams and captained the 1957 and '58 Buckeye golf teams. His football career was shortened by a serious knee injury he sustained two weeks before the opening of the 1956 season.
Mont, former head coach and star player at the University of Maryland, was appointed to lead DePauw's football program on April 29. Learn more in this previous story.
