Indiana's All-Time Winningest College Coach, Wayne Perry '72, Adjusts to Life After Football

Wayne Perry 2007.jpgMarch 28, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - "I haven't regretted the decision yet," says Wayne Perry, who retired as head football coach at Hanover College at the end of the 2007 season. A 1972 graduate of DePauw University, "Perry's 26 teams at Hanover College won more games -- 174 -- than have those of any college football coach ever in Indiana," notes an article in the Louisville Courier-Journal that describes how he is adjusting to his career change.

Perry continues to work at Hanover as coach of the men's and women's golf teams. He is also teaching health and fitness classes and is helping the school raise funds for athletic facilities.

"Whether it will be enough to appease me, I don't know," the 57-year-old Perry says of his new roles. "Football will be always in my blood."

"Perry grew up nearby in Madison, played football for DePauw University, got into coaching and was hired by Hanover initially as an assistant," writes Dale Moss. "Though Hanover offers no athletic scholarships, and its admissions standards are stiff, more and more good players were Wayne Perry Celebrates.jpgattracted by Perry. His teams went undefeated five times. Hanover lost but once from 1997-1999."

The story adds, "Perry misses already the regimen, the preparation. He braces for still-more adjustment pangs when practice resumes in earnest this summer. Within the football fraternity, anyway, Perry relies on his legacy being remembered fondly, should he need it be."
