May 19, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - A news report by Davis M. Federspiel, a 2007 graduate of DePauw University, was a national finalist for a 2007 Mark of Excellence Award from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). Federspiel was cited in the "television sports reporting" category for "Roller Derby," a story she created for student-run D3TV while a student at DePauw.
The 2007 Mark of Excellence Award winners and finalists were announced today. Collegiate journalists submitted more than 3,400 entries in 39 categories. National winners and finalists will be recognized Friday, September 5, during the SPJ's 2008 convention and national journalism conference in Atlanta.
Federspiel was a communication major at DePauw and played on the women's soccer team. She now works for Starcom Worldwide, a media communications agency, and is based in Chicago.
"I encourage media executives who are looking for the next wave of high-quality journalists to pay attention to the winners of SPJ's Mark of Excellence Awards," says Neil Ralston, SPJ's vice president for campus chapter affairs. "These young men and women represent some of the best that journalism programs have to offer, and we're proud to be able to honor them at the national level."
