June 7, 2008
June 7, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - "Think. Always exercise your mind," Merritt K. Alcorn told the Class of 2008 of Indiana's Madison Consolidated High School last night. Alcorn, an attorney and former school board member is a 1971 graduate of DePauw University. He provided the keynote speech at the school's commencement, telling the 192 graduates, "Keep a journal of thoughts, not a diary of events."
A story in today's Madison Courier notes, "A retired educator advised (Alcorn) when he was a student at DePauw University to keep a journal of not only his thoughts but also of others whose thoughts he read or heard about. 'I'm on volume four of my thoughts,' he told the graduates."
A political science major at DePauw, Alcorn graduated from MCHS in 1967. Now an attorney with Alcorn, Goering & Sage LLP, he told the assembly, "Relationships are important," but pointed out that they are sometimes "risky and painful." He stated, "May you be honest and gentle as you reinvent yourselves. Be a student for life, and may you rest easy."
