Counselor Carlabeth Mathias '76 Opens Private Practice
July 23, 2008
July 23, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - "Carlabeth Mathias began her career as an elementary school teacher but soon realized another passion: counseling," notes the Indianapolis Star. Mathias, a 1976 graduate of DePauw University, is retiring from her position as counselor at Hoosier Road Elementary School in Fishers, Indiana.
"As a classroom teacher, I found that a lot of my students were challenged by so many social and emotional issues and family issues," she tells the newspaper. "I wanted to see if I could help them with those things."
Carlabeth (Elster) Mathias has now "opened a private practice -- Mathias Counseling and Consulting, in Fishers -- so she could continue to help children and families," writes Carrie Ritchie. "At her practice, Mathias offers classes like the ones she taught as an elementary school counselor. She said her classes cover everything from dealing with divorce to making friends. Mathias also is a consultant for Bully Safe Schools, LearningRx in Carmel and several school districts. She said a private practice appeals to her because it lets her work with children and families, which she loves to do."
Matthias says her practice "is exciting, and it's very challenging. I'm the bookkeeper, the appointment secretary, the Web master and the therapist, all rolled into one."
