September 27, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw University jumped out to a 24-0 lead and survived a late scare, defeating Sewanee (the University of the South) 27-20 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Blackstock Stadium this afternoon. With the Family Weekend victory, DePauw improves to 3-0 on the season and is now 2-0 in SCAC play. Sewanee is 2-2, 1-1.
DePauw led 24-0 when, with just 27 seconds left before halftime, Chalankis Brown intercepted a Dick pass and returned it 97 yards for a score. The score energized the visitors, who outscored their hosts 13-3 in the second half and made a final, unsuccessful effort to tie the game with a late drive.
Freshman running back Jon Ellis logged his second consecutive 100+ yard game, gaining 101 yards on 23 carries. Junior quarterback Spud Dick completed 14-of-25 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Brayden Dahlstrom pulled in four passes for 73 yards, with 53 of those yards coming on one play. Junior Brad Paus also had four receptions.
Dick's performance -- his 11th career game with 200 or more passing yards -- moved him into a third place tie in the all-time DePauw record book (with Bernie Haskins).
Next weekend, the Tigers travel to Jackson, Mississippi for a 1 p.m. (CDT) SCAC meeting with Millsaps College.
