December 19, 2008
December 19, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. — Alice Loughran, an attorney with Steptoe & Johnson LLP and 1988 graduate of DePauw University, is a recipient of the 2008 Recognition of Excellence Award by the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel (NARTC). Loughran and her colleague, Charles G. Cole, share the honor.
The NARTC is a 1000-member organization composed of in-house and outside trial counsel for the railroad industry. The award is made annually to an Association member for contributions to the Association and the industry. This marks the first time the organization has given the award to an appellate lawyer, as well as the first time two lawyers have been honored together.
"We congratulate Chuck and Alice, not simply because they won this award, but because they exemplify what Steptoe is best known for -- intelligent, thorough, and creative litigation strategy and writing," says Roger Warin, chairman of Steptoe & Johnson. "This is exceptionally well-deserved recognition for two of our finest appellate litigators."
Loughran is a member of the firm's litigation and regulatory & industry affairs departments and is active in appellate litigation at all levels. She is based in the Washington, D.C. office.
"It has been a sincere pleasure to work alongside NARTC attorneys on some of the challenging issues facing the industry," she noted. "What a terrific surprise to receive this award."
The Phoenix-based National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel comprises outstanding railroad defense trial attorneys from across the United States and Canada. Membership in the organization is limited to lawyers who handle litigation and related matters for railroads or their affiliated entities, or who handle litigation or other legal matters directly affecting railroads.
