Rockne Brubaker '78 and His Skater Son Noted in USA Today
January 24, 2009
January 24, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — Figure skater Rockne Brubaker's "father, Rockne, was a standout linebacker at DePauw University in Indiana," notes USA Today. "And yes, they were named after Knute Rockne, the former Notre Dame coach." The younger Brubaker came into this week's U.S. Figure Skating Championships as the reigning senior national champion and was the 2007 world junior champion. The elder Brubaker, a surgeon, graduated from DePauw in 1978.
"Brubaker is the type of athlete who could probably compete in any sport," writes Kelly Whiteside. "He loves cycling, hockey and playing softball. When he was younger, he also wrestled, played basketball and baseball and ran track and cross country ...Brubaker plays pickup hockey once a week, and he thinks being a well-rounded athlete helps his skating."
