Col. Ted Sanders '54 Passes Away at Age 89

Frederick Sanders.jpgMarch 30, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — Frederick A. "Ted" Sanders, a 1954 DePauw graduate who initiated the University's Air Force ROTC program and later served his alma mater as an administrator, died this morning in Indianapolis. He was 89 years old.

A native of Steubenville, Ohio, Sanders served 30 years in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1970 as a colonel. His military decorations included the Air Medal (with four gold clusters) and the Air Force Legion of Merit. In 1951, Sanders initiated DePauw's Air Force ROTC department, leading the program and teaching classes until 1955.

Colonel Sanders returned to the University in 1970 as associate director of development. In October 1971, he became director of development and alumni services. His title was changed to director of development. He retired from DePauw in 1987 having also served as director of planned giving.

Ted Sanders was past president of the Rotary Club of Greencastle and was a member of the Putnam County Foundation Founders' Club.

The family is planning a private memorial luncheon. Memorial gifts may be made to the DePauw University Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund.
