April 5, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — "Yeah, basketball is a pretty popular sport in my family," says Joel Learnard, a sophomore at Catlin High School in Illinois. The Danville Commercial-News has named Learnard its high school player of the year, and notes, "his father, Greg, played basketball at Georgetown and his aunt, Paula Wasko, played at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind." Wasko is a 1982 DePauw graduate.
Joel Learnard averaged 18.3 points and 5.5 rebounds in leading his team to Illinois' Class 1A sectional championship.
