Coach Bill Fenlon Has Ties to Tomorrow's Butler-Siena Game
February 19, 2010
February 19, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — "Among the dozen or so Siena fans who made the trip early to Indianapolis sat Bill Fenlon, the uncle of sophomore Conner Fenlon," writes Mark McGuire of New York's Albany Times Union. "As he watched the Saints practice Friday morning in Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse, Fenlon mentioned that he has a strong connection to both schools."
McGuire continues, "There is the uncle part, of course. But Fenlon is also the winningest coach in the history of DePauw University, a Division III school about 40 miles down the road, and his long list of former players includes Butler's head coach Brad Stevens."
Fenlon, who came to DePauw in 1992, jokes, "He learned how not to do things from me. He's done a fantastic job. I'm learning from him now."
"Fenlon was being modest: Earlier this year, he earned his 400th career win," the writer points out. "Meanwhile, Stevens is 80-14 in his first two-plus years as a head coach. One more win, and he will tie the all-time record for most wins in the first three seasons of a head coaching career."
Stevens (pictured at right) is a 1999 graduate of DePauw. He was recently named one of the Indianapolis Business Journal's "Forty Under 40."
