Ohio Northern Defeats Trine in Opening Game of NCAA

May 13, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — Ohio Northern pitcher Cortney Cash pitched a two-hitter and led the Polar Bears to a 5-1 win over Thomas More in the opening game of the Greencastle, Indiana Regional in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship. The top-seeded and fifth-ranked Polar Bears improved to 38-5, while the Saints dropped to 22-19.
The Polar Bears scored three in the third as Cash led off with a single and moved to second when Mandi Fought reached on a sacrifice bunt. She advanced to third on Jackie Mangola's sacrifice bunt and scored on Kimi Blewett's sacrifice fly. Tina Mangola drove in Fought with a single and later scored when Katie Cretin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Ohio Northern added one in the fourth when Blewett drove in Fought with a single. The Saints reached the board in the fifth as Brittany Wegman led off with a homer to left center. The Polar Bears added a final run in the sixth when Tina Mangola scored Jackie Mangola with a ground-rule double to right center.
Tina Mangola had two of Ohio Northern's seven hits, while Blewett and Tina Mangola each drove in a pair. Wegman and Amanda Minor had one hit each for the Saints.
Cash (pictured) improved to 20-3 with the win, while Dana Bors dropped to 14-9.
Ohio Northern advances in the regional to face the winner of the North Central-Trine game, while Thomas More moves to the loser's bracket to face the loser of that contest.
