May 8, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — Swimmer John Cook and football player Gerry "Spud" Dick have been selected as DePauw's top senior male student-athletes by DePauw's athletic department.
Cook and Dick earned the Phil Eskew Award which is presented annually to a senior male athlete who best exemplifies effort and excellence in academics, athletics, leadership, integrity, dedication to the team, campus involvement and community service.
Cook (left), a history major from Leawood, Kan., qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships all four years and earned 18 All-America honors including eight in individual events and 10 as a member of a relay.
He finished in the top eight in two individual events and six relays. Cook was a three-time Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year and was the Swimmer of the Meet in 2009. Overall, he won six individual conference championships.
Cook holds school and SCAC meet records in three individual events and as part of four relays. Cook was part of four SCAC championship teams and was an SCAC Academic Honor Roll selection.
Dick (right), an economics major from Indianapolis, broke every DePauw career passing record after starting all but two games at quarterback in his four-year career. He was one of four finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy which is presented annually as the top football award in Division III honoring excellence in athletics, academics and campus/community service.
A three-time all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference player, Dick was named the D3football.com South Region Offensive Player of the Year in 2009. As a senior he directed DePauw to its first appearance in the NCAA Division III postseason as the Tigers tied for the SCAC championship. Dick also was a second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection in 2009 and named to the SCAC Academic Honor Roll all four years.
Cross country/track competitor Lauren Reich and softball pitcher Megan Soultz were named the Amy Hasbrook Award winners as the top senior female student-athletes. Complete information on those awards is available here.
The awards are named for former DePauw student-athletes Amy Hasbrook '00 and Phil Eskew Jr. '63.
