Seth Glickman '96 Receives Institute of Medicine Fellowship

November 7, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — Seth Glickman, M.D., a 1996 graduate of DePauw University, has been named a 2010 Anniversary Fellow by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Dr. Glichman's fellowship was sponsored by the ABIM Foundation in honor of John Benson Jr., M.D., past president and chief executive officer of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and an IOM member.
The fellowship was created to honor the work of Dr. Benson, a board certified internist and gastroenterologist, who was named president of the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1975 and the president emeritus in 1991. "The fellowship provides talented, early career health science scholars the opportunity to participate actively in the work of the IOM and further their careers as future leaders in the field," notes an announcement. "Each Fellow is assigned to an IOM member who will serve as a senior mentor during the two-year fellowship. Through the experience, Fellows will learn from a variety of experts and perspectives, including government officials, industry leaders, executives of voluntary health organizations, scientists, and other health professionals."
Dr. Glickman is an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholar. He was nominated for the fellowship "due to his demonstrated interest in and focus 
on core elements of medical professionalism ... His research is focused in several areas including: the relationships of organizational structure and systems management, physician behaviors, and financial incentive to patient outcomes and safety; ethical issues related to the participation of human subjects; and the health implications of regional systems of health care for patients with time-sensitive conditions such as myocardial infarction and stroke."
After graduating from DePauw, where he majored in biological sciences, Glickman received a degree from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine, and completed residency training in emergency medicine at the University of Chicago Hospital. Dr. Glickman also earned an M.B.A. in health care management at the Duke University Fuqua School of Business, and completed a two-year fellowship in health policy and outcomes research at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. He is a Fellow at the Cecil B. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at UNC and an adjunct assistant research professor of general medicine and health care management at Duke University Medical Center and the Fuqua School of Business.
