Carol Fitzgerald '61 Retiring as Delaware County's Director of Libraries
December 24, 2010
December 24, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — Carol (Hack) Fitzgerald, director of the department of libraries in Sussex County, Delaware for the past 25 years and 1961 graduate of DePauw University, is retiring next month after 25 years, reports the Delaware Coast Press. "Fitzgerald, 71, majored in geography at DePauw University and acquired a master's degree in geography at Florida State University. She then obtained a second master's degree in library science at the University of Arizona," notes the newspaper.
"I will miss her strong support of libraries -- their missions, staffers, funding, and programming," says Sue Keefe, director of the South Coastal Library. "What she has always worked for are the creation and operation of libraries that are able to successfully provide what their communities require and desire."
In her post, "Fitzgerald directly oversaw the three county libraries in Greenwood, Milton and Bethany Beach, as well as the Bookmobile service. She also works in conjunction with the county's 11 independent libraries and works cooperatively with libraries across the state with regards to funding and more."
The article by Laura Dignan points out, "Before accepting a position with the county in 1986, Fitzgerald served as director at the Delmar Public Library from 1979-1985. Prior to that, she was a high school geography teacher."
"I hadn't thought about (becoming a librarian) early on," Fitzgerald tells the paper. "I think helping people find things, find information, find books they were interested in, that whole idea of helping people get to what they wanted is what drew me in."
