Junior Brad Wethington is Goldwater Scholar

DePauw University junior Bradley P. Wethington is the recipient of a 2012 award from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. The Goldwater Scholarship, the premier undergraduate science and mathematics award in the United States, was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

A computer science and economics double major and Science Research Fellow, becomes fifth DePauw undergraduate in the past four years to win a Goldwater Scholarship,  joining Catie Baker '12, Kathleen F. Mittendorf '10, Alexander P. Breitinger '09 and Nichole R. Stone '09. 

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in theLGL5174 U.S. Senate. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.

This spring, the program awarded 282 scholarships for the 2012–13 academic year to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States, which will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Since its inception, the Foundation has bestowed more than 6,200 scholarships worth approximately $39 million.
