Michael Engle '11 is Wide Receivers Coach at Bryant University
September 7, 2012
"Michael Engle graduated from DePauw University in the spring of 2011 with a degree in political science and future plans to advance his studies in law school," begins a story in the Terre Haute Tribune-Star. Joey Bennett reports that those aspirations of Engle are on hold, for the moment. "After coaching running backs last fall at DePauw, Engle has taken a big leap up the coaching ladder and now serves as the wide receivers coach for Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I. Bryant competes at Football Championship Subdivision level, and is coming off consecutive 7-4 seasons."
"Each day reminds me that staying in the coaching profession is a great career choice for me," says Engle. "I truly enjoy having the opportunity to impact the lives of student athletes on a daily basis and stay within the game of football that I have always loved."
He adds, "I have been extremely lucky to be able to work for great institutions with great football traditions. Each day is a learning experience for me and I continue to develop as a coach and person with each day passing day."
The newspaper notes, "Engle was a backup quarterback for the first two years he played at DePauw, and then got a chance during his junior year after an injury to Tiger signalcaller Spud Dick -- one of the top Division III quarterbacks ever. Engle took over for good in his senior year, leading the Tigers to a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and the NCAA tournament. He completed 282 passes for 3,180 yards and 30 touchdowns in his final season. Engle averaged 289 yards per game, completing 65 percent of his passes on the year."
