Prof. Bob Dewey Among Presenters at Fiji Rugby Centenary Conference

Robert Dewey 2008Robert Dewey, assistant professor of history at DePauw University, will be among the presenters at the Fiji Rugby Centenary Conference, hosted by the University of the South Pacific (USP) in Suva, Fiji Islands. The event, set for July 1-2,  marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Fiji Rugby Union.

Dr. Dewey, a noted expert on Fiji rugby, first proposed the event and spent a year helping to plan the two-day conference.  He will present a paper and chair two panels as well as the  conference wrap-up session. The schedule will include an opening address by the president of Fiji and panels that include academics from Fiji and overseas as well as current and former Fiji rugby players, coaches and administrators.

Bob Dewey  published a chapter titled "Pacific EAST COLLEGEIslands Rugby: navigating the global professional era," which appeared in the 2008 book, The Changing Face of Rugby. In 2009, the professor was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (RHS) for his book, British National Identity and Opposition to Membership of Europe, 1961-63: The Anti-Marketeers. He is currently working on a manuscript, "History of Rugby Football in Fiji."
