$1 Million Lilly Endowment Grant to Support New Collaboration Between DePauw and IU's Kelley School of Business
December 11, 2013
DePauw University and Indiana University's Kelley School of Business will use a $1 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to launch a new program for DePauw students, "The Liberal Arts in the New Economy.”
The collaboration -- which launches next fall -- will offer DePauw students an opportunity to augment the strengths of their liberal arts coursework with educational programs from the Kelley School, one of the nation’s most respected business schools.
The program will include DePauw Winter Term programs offered by the Kelley School, real-world internship experiences, and specialized support to help students secure related job opportunities upon graduation from DePauw.
Officials at Lilly Endowment announced their support for this initiative last week, and the grant comes as part of the Endowment’s Initiative to Promote Opportunities Through Educational Collaborations aimed at improving employment opportunities for students graduating from Indiana colleges and universities.
“DePauw has a long and proud tradition of connecting a powerful liberal arts education with preparation for a life’s work,” said Larry Stimpert, DePauw vice president for academic affairs. “The Endowment’s grant will enable us to continue to innovate in this area.”
Idalene Kesner, dean of the Kelley School and the Frank P. Popoff Chair of Strategic Management, said the collaboration with DePauw is continuation of the school's efforts working with liberal arts students looking to bolster their skill sets with business acumen.
“The Kelley School is committed to growing the state’s economy and helping to create future Indiana leaders,” Kesner said. “This collaboration with DePauw will help keep our outstanding liberal arts students in the state by helping them make connections with local organizations, grow their leadership skills and work to solve real-world problems in the Indiana business community.”
For decades, the Kelley School has partnered with IU's College of Arts and Sciences on the Liberal Arts and Management Program. More recently, its Art of Business academy has worked with non-business majors at IU and other research universities.
“The Liberal Arts in the New Economy” will build upon other recent additions to DePauw University’s offerings, including the launch of the Hubbard Center for Student Engagement, which brings together the offices of Career Services, Pre-Business, Pre-Law, and Pre-Medical Advising, Community Service and Service Learning, Off-Campus Study, and Post-Graduate Fellowships. The Hubbard Center ensures that all DePauw University students are well guided in their classwork, take full advantage of the university's co- and extracurricular programs, and secure internship and job placements.
