Art of Caleb Weintraub On Display at Peeler Art Center
September 3, 2014
Caleb Weintraub, assistant professor of art at Indiana University-Bloomington, is presenting a new body of painting, sculpture, and digital art at DePauw University's Peeler Art Center. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will remain on display through October 6 in the Peeler Center’s Visual Arts Gallery. (at right: Spooky Action a Distance; 2014 - oil on canvas, 70" x 72")
According to the artist, his work explores "institutions, the history of which may or may not be appropriate as we move towards a future both global and insular at the same time. I see something tribe-like in the absence of political and cultural homogeneity and in the simultaneous attempts to impose a sameness on disparate entities.
All manner of institutional signifiers are a source of fascination for me. I am drawn to the tangible and intangible marks of institutions: uniforms, gender, age, leadership structure, values, logos, insignias, money -- those who benefit from the institutions, those who are threatened by them."
The galleries at the Richard E. Peeler Art Center are open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and Sunday 1 - 5 p.m., and are closed during University breaks and holidays.
