DePauw and IU McKinney Partner on New 'Law Scholar' Program

DePauw University and Indiana University's Robert H. McKinney School of Law announce the creation of the “DePauw University Law Scholar” program. The first two students or alumni from DePauw will be chosen by February 15 and begin their legal educations at IU McKinney in Fall 2015. DePauw will nominate two students or alumni each year for admission to McKinney Law, following the university’s nomination procedures.

“The new partnership with DePauw University is exciting for both of our institutions,” said IU McKinney Dean Andrew R. Klein. “DePauw scholars will be able to take part in the wide range of learning opportunities, working in state and county government, business, and non-profit agencies across the Indianapolis area. This kind of experience is vital to young lawyers and will help set these students apart, making them uniquely prepared as they embark on their careers.”

“This partnership represents the latest chapter in DePauw’s lengthy history of preparing students to attend some of the nation’s best law schools,” added Raj Bellani, dean for experiential learning and career planning at DePauw, who also directs the University’s Hubbard Center for Student Engagement.  The Center guides and advises students on integrating their curricular and co-curricular experiences, with a focus on the integrated offices of Career Services, Pre-Business, Pre-Law, and Pre-Medical Advising, Community Service and Service Learning, Off-Campus Study, and Post-Graduate Fellowships.

“Our goal in the Hubbard Center is to ensure that our students connect their liberal arts education with a well-laid plan for life after graduation. For our students interested in pursuing a career in law, the unique components of this new partnership with the McKinney School of Law will help ensure that their passion becomes a reality,” says Bellani (pictured at left).

Applicants must be nominated by DePauw, and the university’s representatives will review academic performance, letters of recommendations, volunteer and leadership experience, and areas of interest in the legal profession. Scholars will receive a minimum of a half-tuition scholarship, will be designated a program fellow in the student’s chosen area of study with a chance to meet with faculty during the first semester for help in determining a course of study should the student wish to seek that kind of guidance, paid employment as a research assistant after completing 30 hours of law school, and guaranteed experiential learning opportunities. Nomination deadline is February 15, 2015.
