Saturday's Annual Concerto Winners' Concert To Feature Nine Soloists

April 6, 2015

Four delightful opera arias, three romantic concertos and two American musical theatre standards make for what is certain to be one remarkable concert at DePauw University’s Kresge Auditorium this Saturday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m.

A longstanding tradition in the DePauw School of Music, the Concerto Competition Winners’ Concert showcases the talents of exceptional student musicians selected from the final round of the annual contest held in February. The DePauw University Orchestra, under the musical direction of Orcenith Smith, will accompany the soloists in a gala-style program approximately one hour in length.

Sophomore pianist Shiyu Su opens the event with the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 followed by a trio of popular arias: Julia Massicote will sing “Je veux vivre” (Juliet’s Waltz Song) from Gounod’s Romeo et Julliete, Dana Hart “Ah, qual gelido orror . . . Il padre adorato” from Mozart’s Idomeneo and Addy Sterret “Je dis que rien ne m’épouvante” (Micaëla's Aria) from Bizet’s Carmen. Natalia Fumero then takes the stage to perform Weber’s Concertino for Clarinet before Dallas Grey and Angel Riley each perform a legendary work by American composers of musical theatre -- Bernstein’s “A Simple Song” from Mass and Gershwin’s “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess, respectively. Also featured is cellist Peter Lockman, who will play Tchaikovsky’s Pezzo Capriccioso in B Minor. Soprano Julie Strauser concludes the evening with “Les oiseaux dans la charmille,” the spectacular coloratura “Doll Song” from Offenbach’s Le contes d’Hoffmann.
