HS Baseball Coach Bob Kyle '78 Leads Team to First-Ever State Championship
June 30, 2015
"You don't realize it, then you'll be driving down the road and you'll think about what you've done and realize you're state champs," says Bob Kyle, the head baseball coach at Rockville High School, which won Indiana's Class A championship ten days ago. The 1978 graduate of DePauw University adds, "And you realize what a great accomplishment those kids pulled off." (Kyle and his players celebrate after winning the state title)
The Terre Haute Tribune-Star's David Hughes writes, "After coaching at the old Montezuma High School for two seasons, Kyle served two different stints at Rockville -- the first lasting four seasons (1985-88) and the second lasting 10 seasons and counting (2006-now). Even though Kyle's 2015 Rox captured the state title June 20 at Victory Field when they knocked off Shakamak 4-2, he acknowledges that his teams haven't always been dominant."
"My first year at Rockville [1985], we were 0-20," he tells the newspaper. "And I wear No. 21 on my back because that's the most losses we've had in a season [21 in 2006]."S
Since winning Rockville's first-ever state title in any sport, Kyle -- who majored in physical education and was a pitcher on the Tiger baseball team -- says, "The only change I've noticed is I've gotten a lot of cards and phone calls and people coming up to congratulate me on winning it. Other than that, I hope nothing else changes. The boys win the game. The coaches just make out the lineup."
