New School of Music Faculty Member Peter Seymour and PROJECT Trio Perform Sunday Night

August 20, 2015

DePauw University's students -- especially those who will arrive on campus for the first time Saturday -- and members of the campus and Greencastle communities are invited to attend a concert Sunday night, August 23, featuring the Brooklyn, New York-based PROJECT Trio.  The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium, located with the Green Center for the Performing Arts, and is presented free of charge. PROJECT Trio is led by double-bassist Peter Seymour, who joins the DePauw University School of Music faculty this year.  Seymour knows the campus well: he performed with PROJECT Trio for DePauw's Guest Artist Series in September 2012, and this June he attended the inaugural meeting of the 21stCentury Musician Initiative's (21CM) advisory board.  Yo-Yo Ma was among those who also attended the session and the opening of Music on the Square in downtown Greencastle. 21CM was launched in October 2013 gift with a $15 million from Judson and Joyce Green ('74 & '75).

After reluctantly accepting string faculty member and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra bassist Gregory Dugan’s decision to step down after 30 years of outstanding service to the School of Music, Dean Mark McCoy invited Seymour to deepen his connection to DePauw by leading the School’s string bass studio.

“When Dean McCoy approached me about joining DePauw’s music faculty, my mind immediately filled with ideas and excitement,” says Seymour, who calls Brooklyn, New York, home. “I have dreamed about developing a bass studio since I studied with my teacher Paul Ellison -- I have always admired his pedagogy, dedication to his students, and the artistry that he brings to his teaching.”

With degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Shepherd School of Music and performance experience with the Cleveland Orchestra, the New World Symphony and PROJECT Trio, Seymour will bring a wealth of knowledge of his own to 21CM and to DePauw’s applied instrumental program.

“Getting to know Dr. McCoy through 21CM has shown me that we share a passion for developing the role of twenty-first century musicians,” Seymour adds. “I look forward to working together with DePauw’s outstanding faculty and students and building a superb bass studio.”

Seymour will travel from New York to Greencastle each week that classes are in session in 2015-16, while continuing an active performance career with PROJECT Trio.  He's among ten new faculty members joining the DePauw School of Music this fall.
