Big Coaching Win Totals Run in the Fenlon Family

December 14, 2015

"Joe Fenlon knows he is on the cusp of a major milestone in high school boys basketball," begins a story in the Tampa Bay Times. "Fenlon stands at 699 victories. He can achieve the mark next week at home when the (Tampa Prep) Terrapins host the City of Tampa tournament," reports Bob Putnam. The text adds, "There was a time when Fenlon thought about leaving high school basketball to follow the same path as his brother, Bill, who is in his 24th season at DePauw University and is the school's all-time winningest coach with 395 victories. But Fenlon stayed. By doing so, he became an institution at Tampa Prep. He has coached big-time players such as Anddrikk Frazier (USF), Casey Sanders (Duke) and current phenom Juwan Durham, who has signed with Connecticut."

You'll find the article at the newspaper's website.

Bill Fenlon came to DePauw in 1992 and his former players include Brad Stevens '99, now head coach of the NBA's Boston Celtics.  At an Indianapolis fundraiser in August, Stevens spoke of his college coach. "Stevens said Fenlon taught him how to be a teammate, calling it the greatest lesson he learned as he went into coaching," wrote David Woods in the Indianapolis Star.

Earlier that same day, Fenlon paid tribute to Stevens as the latter received ePauw's Young Alumni Award at a private luncheon in downtown Indianapolis, which is recapped here.
