Prof. Richard Hellmich '77 Inducted Into His High School's Hall of Fame
December 25, 2015
Richard L. Hellmich, assistant professor of entomology at Iowa State University and 1977 graduate of DePauw University, has been inducted into the Greensburg, Indiana Community High School Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony took place on December 18; he graduated from the high school in 1973.
"They say Dr. Hellmich has always had an interest in insects, which may have led him to DePauw University where he would earn a B.A. in zoology in 1977," notes a story in the Greensburg Daily News. "He would capitalize on that by attending Ohio State University and earning a doctorate in entomology -- the study of insects -- thereafter. Dr. Hellmich spends most of his time doing research for the United States Department of Agriculture, working as a research entomologist in Ames, Iowa, and is currently a professor at Iowa State University."
"What most people don’t realize is that the team skills you learn in high school sports, similar kinds of skills can be built on science teams," he tells the newspaper. "If you put these people together like a team, it’s like having a quarterback, a lineman and a wide receiver. You find people and what they specialize in and you put them together."
