Prof. Donald "Jack" Cook Publishes Elements of Chemistry
May 15, 1974
May 15, 1974, Greencastle, Ind. - Donald J. Cook, professor of chemistry and head of the department at DePauw University, is the author of Elements of Chemistry. The book is published by the D. Van Nostrand Company of New York.
An elementary textbook at the college level written specifically for those students in the liberal arts who are non-science majors, the book is based upon the historical development of chemistry and illustrates how the evolution of modern chemical knowledge was the result of two centuries of much experimental work, the gradual gathering of factual data, and the intellectual struggles of 19th Century chemists.
Dr. Cook has taught chemistry at DePauw for 29 years and has been a leader in advocating good science education for non-science majors, working extensively in this area nationally through National Science Foundation institutes.
In the book's preface, the professor expresses "my gratitude to all my students -- both majors and non-majors -- for having allowed me to lead them to the thresholds of their own minds in faith and lovingness."
"Jack" Cook is president-elect of the Midwestern Association of Chemistry Teachers in Liberal Arts Colleges.
