Media Outlet Covers Free Speech Panel Discussion at DePauw

October 5, 2018

"The debate over free speech and restrictions on it is playing out at colleges across the country," begins an Indiana Public Media report. "In response to what officials call the tensions that have arisen over that conversation, DePauw University officials hosted a panel last night with experts and university administrators."

Alex Eady notes, "Journalism professor Deborah Douglas says it’s important that the university upholds free speech values and creates safe spaces for students of all backgrounds."

Douglas, who is DePauw's Eugene S. Pulliam Center Distinguished Visiting Professor of Journalism, moderated the conversation. She said, "If we can create an environment where people feel safe to express their ideas and bear witness to their experience then I think we’ll be doing our job."

Participating in the session were: Jeffrey M. McCall '76, professor of communication (media studies); DePauw University President D. Mark McCoy; Cameron Okeke, research analyst, Justice Policy Center, the Urban Institute; and Miranda Spivack, independent journalist and formerly DePauw's Pulliam Distinguished Professor of Journalism.
