Interviewing Tips for Search Chairs
Interviewing can be stressful, not only for the candidate, but for the Interviewer! Here are 6 tips for better interviews:
- Be prepared: Prep on the candidate’s resume/CV and have questions ready to go when interviewing. If you are not prepared, this is a disservice to the candidate. Provide the candidate with as much information as possible about the position to determine if this is the right role for them.
- Be respectful: Give candidates your undivided attention, put them at ease and be transparent about the process. Don’t be late; respect their time. Be genuine and attentive.
- Build rapport: Establish trust and a genuine connection to build the foundation of a good relationship. Create a comfortable atmosphere for the candidate. Smile and maintain eye contact, offer them something to drink. Introduce yourself and others and give brief summaries of your roles. Remember-Candidates will tell others about their experience!
- Communicate well and often: Be responsive and maintain a high level of communication with your candidates. Explain the process and timeline. Ask if the candidate has any questions.
- Listen more than you talk.
- Refresh your knowledge of our mission and vision, as well as the benefits and perks of the position you are hiring for.
