Teaching Data Analytics Using Excel and Bloomberg

In the classroom, computers are as common as pencil and paper, but teaching methods remain virtually unchanged, with chalk-and-talk the dominant mode of delivery. This two-day, in-person professional development workshop will demonstrate how to utilize active learning techniques to teach economics, finance, and business with Excel and Bloomberg terminals. Participants will gain pedagogical knowledge and skills applicable to a variety of subfields and courses at different levels, enabling enhancement of existing courses and creation of new materials and content.
The workshop is designed to provide both ready-to-go classroom material and tools that can be used to generate your own examples and content. You can test drive a single application and gradually expand your teaching repertoire. This is an ideal, low-cost way to improve and re-energize a course you have taught many times or to create an entirely new course.
Target Audience: Economics and Business Faculty
Anyone teaching Economics or Business courses is welcome and will benefit from the innovative applications and pedagogical strategies showcased in this workshop.
Bios
Dr. Humberto Barreto is interested in using computers (especially Microsoft Excel) to improve the teaching and learning of quantitative methods. He is Professor of Business at DePauw University and has published papers and books on pedagogy, including (with Frank M. Howland) Introductory Econometrics using Monte Carlo Simulation with Microsoft Excel (Cambridge University Press, 2006), Intermediate Microeconomics with Microsoft Excel (Cambridge University Press, 2009) -- now freely open-access -- and Teaching Macroeconomics with Microsoft Excel (Cambridge Univeristy Press, 2016). He has been a Fulbright Scholar, won several teaching awards, and has presented the materials used in this workshop at many colleges and universities around the world. His most recent book is Gateway to Business Analytics, an open-access inroductory text used in DePauw's new Business Analytics program.
Dr. Bin Qiu is an Assistant Professor of Economics and Management (Finance) at the School of Business and Leadership of DePauw University. He teaches Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management, Financial Markets and Institutions, Applied Portfolio Management, and Corporate Finance. Prior to joining DePauw, he taught at Missouri Western State University for six years, where he was granted tenure and promotion. Dr. Qiu’s research interests lie in corporate finance and investments. He earned his PhD in Finance from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa and his MBA from Babson College.
Dates and Location
August 12 and 13, 2024 in the Bloomberg terminals computer lab in Harrison Hall (HH 118) on the campus of DePauw Univeristy in Greencastle, Indiana: campus map.
You will be working with a teammate on a desktop machine (with Bloomberg on it), but you may bring your own laptop, if you wish, and guest wifi is freely available.
We will begin on Monday, August 12, 2024, at 8:00 AM and follow the schedule below.

Costs and Funding
Attendance fee $750, includes lunches, snacks, and refreshments throughout the sessions.
Fee waived for current DePauw faculty. Discounts available for faculty with current appointments at Great Lakes Colleges Association, Associated Colleges of the Midwest, and North Coast Athletic Conference colleges and universities.
