About Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc...
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated began as vision of nine college students on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908. The sorority has grown into a union of thousands of college-trained women who are bound by a powerful mystique, a real moving factor in the lives of students in more than four hundred institutions of higher learning; it is one of the most solvent corporations in the world today.
The Pi Lambda chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was established at DePauw University on March 23, 1991 by "The Pearls of DePauw:" Joy Armstead, Robin Batties, Ronda Henry and Gina Ross. These first four women set out to exemplify the spirit of AKA.
The mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is "Service to all mankind' and the current national program is Global Leadership through Timeless Service, which is coordinated through five initiates that they plan all of their philanthropic events around. Those are:
- Emerging Young Leaders
- Health initiatives (asthma prevention & environmental sustainability)
- Global Poverty
- Economic Security Initative
- Social Justice & Human Rights initiative
Alpha Kappa Alpha's colors are Salmon Pink and Apple Green, their flower is the Pink Tea Rose and their symbol is Ivy.
